Travis, Jimmy and Surge
Band Biography
Travis and the St. Lou's formed in early 2010 and though they've only been playing together for a short time-their sound is one of veterans. Meeting at the infamous Wednesday Night Music Club, Travis Swanson, Jimmy Nevala and Scott Syrjala play the blues and R & B like it's going out of style (which it isn't by the way)!
Travis, their headsy front man, is one true young talent. Not old enough to drink, but he sure can wail on the guitar. Jimmy Nevala, keeping the low end down, loves long walks on the beach, puppies, and has the greatest fan book page ever, on Facebook. Crawling with his cane is Scott Syrjala, the old man of the group at 30 something - he just tries to keep up with these young talents.
With a set list that would rival any true blues band and originals that do the same, Travis and the St. Lou's are an absolute pleasure to not only listen to, but to see as well. They can be seen and heard all around the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Northern Wisconsin.
It wasn't until after I discovered Sean Costello and his music that I realized that playing for a living is what I wanted to do. I was very fortunate to meet Tom Hyslop (writer for the Blues Revue) who showed me all the greats and had all the records I wanted to listen to and learn (I'm still learning!). I discovered the blues at age 17 and haven't looked back since. Ever since my first Freddie King instrumental I've been a student of the blues and take pride in the dedication it takes to hone such a craft. There's nothing else I'd rather be doing then playing the music I love and am blessed to be able to do that with this band. Influences: Sean Costello, Freddie King, B.B. King, Shawn Pittman, Kid Ramos, Robert Ward, Earl Hooker, and so many more...
I've been a student of all types of music for as long as I can remember. I appreciate a broad spectrum of music, spanning from Indie-Pop to Black Metal. In addition to the bass guitar, I play the trumpet, guitar, sing, and march in The Blue Notes Drum and Bugle Corps.
Myself, I am the old man in the group at 30 something. I've been playing the drums for about 3 years now and only have recently been studying the blues. I am a self taught drummer with so, so much more to learn - and I am willing to do so. I am fortunate enough to know some great drummers in our local area, including Dan Stevens who has shown me a thing or two. I have played with, and sometimes still do, a band out of Escanaba, MI called The Jam Band. I have been really lucky to know some great musicians in our area and have been learning everything I can from each one. Some of my influences are Kenny Aronoff, and Noah Levy, ironically both drum for the BoDeans-in which I am a huge fan of!
